Spalletti: Inter Milan in Coppa Italia to win itby Carlos Volcano9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveInter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti says they’re in the Coppa Italia to win it.Inter meet Benevento in the round of 16 on Sunday.“As we saw last year, these games can hold hidden dangers, but the team is focused and learned from that experience,” said Spalletti.“We have a stronger mentality now and will try to improve it further in this match. Benevento boss Cristian Bucchi has experience now and is very good at setting his team out, so his type of side can cause problems.“We also saw in Cup competitions in England and France that big clubs can be surprised by minnows. Benevento eliminated Udinese in order to get here, so in one-off matches, the gap between teams can be wiped out.”On winning the Coppa, he added: “It is certainly an objective. This is probably the simplest to achieve, because there are fewer games on the way to the Final. Big clubs take part and it’ll be tough, but a side like Inter must aim for victory.” About the authorCarlos VolcanoShare the loveHave your say
Man City striker Aguero admits being Liverpool and Owen fanby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester City striker Sergio Aguero admits he grew up a fan off Liverpool. And he says Michael Owen was his favourite striker.Aguero has been Manchester City’s main man for eight years, winning four Premier League titles in the process. His latest league triumph came at the expense of Liverpool, who were searching for their first in the competition. Owen revealed his own admiration for Aguero in his book when discussing the finishing of United striker Marcus Rashford. He argued: “Players like Robbie Fowler, Aguero or Harry Kane, these people who are obsessed with goals. I don’t think he is obsessed with goals.”It seems the respect is mutual, as Aguero wrote in his autobiography Born To Rise: “I’ve always liked Liverpool, maybe because I used to play for Independiente who also played in red.”As a kid, I wanted to be Michael Owen and when I saw him score that goal for England against Argentina I thought ‘you little sh**’! Even aged 10, I knew they couldn’t allow him that much space. He was a terrific player at that time.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
Phelan: How Sir Alex ended my Man Utd careerby Paul Vegasa day agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United assistant coach Mike Phelan has revealed how his time as a player at Old Trafford was brought to an end.Phelan signed for the Old Trafford outfit from Norwich City in 1989 but his career with the club came to a frustrating end five years later. “He came up to me the Friday before the game on Saturday, last game of the season, and pulled me to one side at the training ground,” Phelan told The Athletic.”He said: ‘Enough’s enough, son. I’m letting you go’. ‘Letting me go where?’ ‘You’ve done terrific for me, but I’m going to bring in some of the young kids’.””This is when the Class of ’92 were around. I was older then, a little bit gobby.”‘Who?’ ‘I’m going to play Gary Neville’. ‘Gary Neville? What’s he got? Come on, Gaffer. You’re gonna play a kid?’ ‘Yeah’.”Phelan would go on to join West Brom, where he would spend 18 months before deciding to hang up his boots. Tottenham travel to Fulham on Sunday, aiming to keep their Premier League title hopes alive against ever-increasing odds.A 1-0 loss to Manchester United last weekend was only the tip of the iceberg for manager Mauricio Pochettino, who saw star man Harry Kane ruled out for six weeks due to an ankle injury.Nevertheless, they will hope to negotiate a trip to relegation-threatened Fulham successfully to cut the gap at the top of the table to Liverpool to nine points and remain firmly ensconced in the top four. Match Preview Tottenham’s trip to Fulham is their first in a make-or-break period in their campaign that will also see them contest a Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea this week.Mauricio Pochettino’s squad is at breaking point, with the sale of Moussa Dembele, the international commitments of Son Heung-min and a medium-term injury for Harry Kane all eating away at what little depth was available.Though there are still 11 days left in the transfer window, the Argentine says that he will not be drawn into making hurried signings.“I don’t see it as a gamble not to sign a forward,” he said. “I think in the end, if for another transfer window we don’t sign players or we are not going to sign a striker, that is not going to be a gamble, it’s not going to be a risk.“I think we have players that can cope with that place when Harry Kane is not available. “If we want to find another Kane, I think we are going to make a mistake because to find another Kane is impossible because we are talking about one of the top three, four or five best strikers in the world. “We have the possibility to create our new star through the academy. Of course, that is our objective – to try to create the new star of Tottenham, to find him here in our academy, would be the most exciting thing.”Pochettino’s replacements will first be put to the test against opponents whose yoga sessions have hit the headlines this week.Reports suggest that strikers Aleksandar Mitrovic and Aboubakar Kamara came to blows during the class over a comment the latter said to the instructor. A week earlier, the pair had an on-field spat over a penalty, which was subsequently missed by Kamara.Having lost their last three, including a 2-1 defeat at home by Oldham in the FA Cup, it will take a remarkable turnaround for the Cottagers to take anything against even a depleted Spurs side. Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel for Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the USA, the Gunners have confirmed. The Frenchman is the north London club’s captain but they are reportedly open to offers for him this summer as Unai Emery looks to reshape his defence. Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare He missed the first half of last season with a serious achilles injury that ruled him out for 10 months, a duration that included the 2018 World Cup which his nation France went on to win. A club statement on Thursday morning read: “Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel to the US for our pre-season tour.”We are very disappointed by Laurent’s actions, which are against our clear instructions. “We hope to resolve this matter and will not be providing any further comment at this time.”Arsenal are reportedly ready to let Koscielny’s contract, which expires in 12 months time, run down.A return to France for the centre-back has been widely mooted, the 33-year-old having previously played for Lorient, Tours and Guinamp in his homeland.Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be interested in signing him.But a number of big-money offers from Ligue 1 have apparently turned the Frenchman’s head.Bordeaux are beleived to want to sign him on a three-year contract, and 33-year-old Koscielny keen on securing long-term security.Arsenal are set to announce the signing of 18-year-old Saint-Etienne centre-back William Saliba for £26.5 million ($33m), having fought off competition from north London rivals Tottenham for his signature. Saliba’s arrival would likely see Koscielny move further down the defensive peckin order at the Emirates and he is keen to get regular first-team action in the latter years of his career. The Gunners are also persuing Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, having submitted a £15m bid for the defender already, but the Hoops value him at £25m ($31m).And new technical director Edu, who will oversee recruitment as part of his new role, will have a say on any future investments, with Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha another key target this summer. The Iowa State Cyclones won 14-7 over the TCU Horned Frogs. (Photo by David Purdy/Getty Images)One would think that a week of lead time isn’t enough to get a college football game scheduled, but where there’s a will there’s a way. Iowa State football had a game canceled earlier this year, and its make-up opponent for next week also had to bow out.The Cyclones were set to host South Dakota State in Week 1, but bad weather led to the game being canceled. In its place, ISU came to an agreement with FCS club Incarnate Word, assuming the Cyclones weren’t in the Big 12 Championship, and UIW wasn’t in the FCS Playoffs. The Cardinals were 1-10 last season, and had blowout losses to FBS clubs New Mexico and North Texas to start its season, so that didn’t seem like a major concern. And yet, UIW finished with six wins in its final eight games, snagging a share of first place in the Southland Conference, and a spot in the playoffs at 6-4.With the Cardinals set to at Montana State on Saturday, Iowa State had to find yet another new opponent for Week 14.Iowa State football managed just that, adding Drake to its schedule just over a week before game time.Iowa State to play host to Drake on Dec. 1. #CyclONEnation? https://t.co/AYK6WiUEUw??? pic.twitter.com/EJWgaQjiIp— Cyclone Football (@CycloneFB) November 20, 2018From ISU’s release on the new game:“We’re most grateful to Drake Athletics Director Brian Hardin, Coach Rick Fox and the Bulldog leadership team for working with us through a very fluid situation,” Pollard said. “Coach (Matt) Campbell wants to play a 12th game and I believe our fans would welcome another chance to see this bowl-bound team play. I know the Bulldogs will enjoy the chance to play at Jack Trice Stadium and compete against a Power 5 opponent.”Drake, which is located in Des Moines, is 7-3 on the season, but did not make the playoffs after finishing tied for second in the Pioneer Football League. The Bulldogs have not faced an FBS opponent this year.[Iowa State]

SANTA CLARA, CA – JANUARY 07: Head coach Nick Saban of the Alabama Crimson Tide reacts during the press conference after his teams 44-16 loss to the Clemson Tigers in the CFP National Championship presented by AT&T at Levi’s Stadium on January 7, 2019 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)It has been nearly a month since the Alabama Crimson Tide were blown out by Clemson in the national title game. However, there are still all kinds of questions swirling as to how the previously undefeated team got beaten so badly. Former Alabama running back Josh Jacobs thinks he has an idea of why the game played out the way it did.In an interview with PFT Live on Wednesday, Jacobs claimed that the team may have been lacking energy and might have been “mentally fatigued” heading into the game.“Honestly, I know it might sound cliché… but, before the game, you could feel it was gonna be a rough one,” Jacobs said, adding that he had that feeling in the locker room. “Not only young players trying to feel the vibe of big games, being able to play so long after a certain amount of time it kind of wears on you, especially when you play great teams week-in and week-out you get everybody’s best shot it kind of wears on you.“I think the team was just mentally fatigued. … For the most part, I think people were just fatigued.”It’s a surprising admission from a Nick Saban-led team.Alabama ran through the regular season with an undefeated record before taking down Georgia in the SEC title game and Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.Alabama went on to lose the national title game, 44-16, and was shut out of the second half. It was one of the largest margins of defeat for Alabama since Nick Saban took over in 2007.Jacobs led the Crimson Tide in rushing touchdowns with 11. He finished the season third in rushing yards (640), third in yards from scrimmage (887), and tied for first in total touchdowns (14).After the season, Jacobs decided to forego his senior year to enter the 2019 NFL Draft.
From 247Sports:“Before we left, their new defensive line coach Shaun Nua came over to me and said he couldn’t let me leave without giving me a Michigan offer,” he added. “I was very surprised by that, to be honest. It felt amazing and I was pretty speechless because I had just met Coach Nua that day. This was my first visit to Michigan and everything was great.”When he returned from Ann Arbor, the Wolverines’ hated rival, Ohio State, came calling for the home-state star.A planned Ohio State trip earlier this month was canceled, but Buckeyes coach Tony Alford made sure to offer Najee Story. He has also spoken to new Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day, when he visited for bowl practice:“Shortly after landing his Michigan offer, Story talked with Ohio State assistant coach Tony Alford by phone. Story was supposed to attend the Ohio State junior day the week before, but that was canceled due to weather.‘I did speak with Coach Alford the night I got back from Michigan, and he told me he intended to do something in person but that wasn’t possible because things got canceled,” Story explained. “He went ahead and offered me a scholarship right then. Ohio State has been the team I’ve watched growing up, so for them to offer me is hard to put into words.’”Now, Story is heading back to Columbus this Saturday with his father. It is too early to know who the finalists will be, and there are dozens of offers inevitably coming Story’s way, but Ohio State and Michigan are definitely getting out ahead of their other recruiting rivals, and both appear to have made a strong earlier impression.[247Sports] ANN ARBOR, MI – OCTOBER 17: Head coach Jim Harbaugh of the Michigan Wolverines leads his team onto the field before the college football game against the Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Stadium on October 17, 2015 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)We’re in the middle of NFL Draft season, between the NFL Combine and the draft itself, so a lot of attention is being paid to the guys who have just finished their college football careers. There are plenty of stars returning to the sport too, though. We’ll have plenty of star power, especially looking at the twow teams that participated in last year’s national title. Alabama and national champ Clemson were both very young, especially on the offensive side.Tua Tagovailoa and Trevor Lawrence return at quarterback, and most of the teams’ major playmakers are back. And that is just for Clemson and Alabama.ESPN has identified the “game breakers” for each of the end of 2018 Top 25 college football teams. Some of the picks are a bit more non-traditional, though Clemson’s is one of the best players in the country. For the Tigers, ESPN went with superstar running back Travis Etienne.Etienne has arguably the best first step of any back in the game, and he possesses a combination of physicality and breakaway speed that allows him to turn any run into a home run. Some other picks from the list:2. Alabama: WR Jaylen Waddle: “The native Texan returned one punt for a touchdown, had 14 receptions of 20-plus yards and averaged 8.04 yards after catch.”3. Oklahoma: WR CeeDee Lamb: “With Marquise Brown now gone, Lamb will take over as the No. 1 wideout and is primed to be OU’s latest All-America-caliber pass-catcher.”4. Georgia: RB D’Andre Swift: “All told, he averaged 6.4 yards per rush and 9.3 yards per reception. And still there’s the sense with him that the best is yet to come.”5. Ohio State: WR K.J. Hill: “With excellent hands and breakaway speed, the senior should have plenty of opportunity to improve on the 70 catches and six touchdowns he had last season.”6. Notre Dame: DE Julian Okwara: “Okwara’s eight sacks as a junior was impressive, and he came within a step or two of adding so much more — finishing the season with 21 QB hurries.”For the full write-ups and Top 25 list, head to ESPN.
The Longhorns will host the Tigers on September 7, which could quickly decide the fate of their season.Brad Crawford of 247Sports believes the contests against LSU and Oklahoma could define Texas’ season.Picking up two victories over top teams could elevate the Longhorns’ chances of making the College Football Playoff. On the flip side, both matchups could also put Texas in an early hole to start the first half of the season. An early win over LSU in September could set the tone for the rest of the season. As for the rivalry battle with Oklahoma, it’s fair to say that game will most likely come down to the wire. It’s going to be an interesting season for Tom Herman and the Longhorns.[247Sports] AUSTIN, TX – OCTOBER 25: A general view of fans at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium during a game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns on October 25, 2008 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)Expectations will be high for the Texas Longhorns this year, but their schedule won’t do them any favors. The prestigious program has a few tough tests ahead of them for 2019.Texas ended the previous season with a statement win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The victory over the Bulldogs let the rest of the country know that the Longhorns can compete with the elites in college football.Unfortunately for Texas, next season features matchups against two of the best schools in the nation: LSU and Oklahoma.Playing against Oklahoma isn’t a surprise, especially since the Cotton Bowl takes place every year. However, the showdown with LSU is pretty intriguing because of the timing.

Liverpool back on top after 2-0 win over Cardiff CityLiverpool defeated Cardiff City with goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner, to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League standings.advertisement Reuters CardiffApril 22, 2019UPDATED: April 22, 2019 09:05 IST James Milner converted from the penalty spot to hand Liverpool a 2-0 win over Cardiff (Reuters Photo)HIGHLIGHTSLiverpool defeated Cardiff City 2-0 away on SundayGeorginio Wijnaldum and James Milner scores for LiverpoolThe win helped Liverpool reclaim the top spot in the Premier League standingsLiverpool regained their place at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Cardiff City on Sunday that restored their two-point lead over Manchester City.Juergen Klopp’s side, who have lost just once in the league all season, have 88 points, a club record in the Premier League era, while City, who beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on Saturday, are on 86 but have a game in hand. That extra game for City will be played on Wednesday when Pep Guardiola’s side travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United and the champions will make the short trip with the pressure firmly back on.Against a Cardiff side battling for Premier League survival, it was a confident, patient performance from Liverpool who have now enjoyed nine straight wins in all competitions.”It was prepared to be a proper banana skin and we knew that, the boys were unbelievable. It was clear, difficult for all of us,” said Klopp.”The boys try really with all they have, we only speak about the things we have to do.””Their attitude is outstanding and it’s a tough season but a very positive one as well,” added the German.Cardiff defended deep and in numbers and limited Liverpool’s opportunities but Roberto Firmino missed a great chance to open the scoring in the 22nd minute, finding himself one-on-one with keeper Neil Etheridge but lifting the ball over the bar.Etheridge was then quick off his line to save with his legs from Mohamed Salah while Cardiff offered a warning when Alisson Becker tipped over Oumar Niasse’s close-range effort.advertisementAfter an intense spell of pressure following the interval, Georginio Wijnaldum broke the deadlock for Liverpool in fine style with a first-time strike from a clever short corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold.Sean Morrison then missed a golden opportunity for relegation-threatened Cardiff to equalise, making a hash of a header when he had an open goal at his mercy after Alisson misjudged a cross.Late in the game, Morrison was judged to have pulled down Mohamed Salah in the box and substitute James Milner converted the 81st-minute penalty to make sure of the crucial three points for Klopp’s side.Liverpool’s ability to avoid slip-ups against lowly opposition has been a key part of their season – they have taken 52 points from a possible 54 against teams in the bottom half of the table.Cardiff remain in 18th place, the final relegation spot, and are three points behind 17th placed Brighton & Hove Albion, having played a game more. Also Read | Manchester United suffer 5th straight away defeat with 4-0 hammering from EvertonFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
