It was the second British Territory Lancaster has visited as part of her six-month deployment to the North Atlantic and Caribbean. The aim of the visit was to provide reassurance and security to the Cayman Islands at the start of the core hurricane season.Contingency plans have been discussed with the local services and authorities, meaning that if Lancaster has to return to the islands to provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief she can respond quickly and effectively. In addition Lancaster’s boarding team also exercised with the Royal Cayman Police marine unit and helped to develop their capability.HMS Lancaster’s Commanding Officer, Commander Steve Moorhouse, said:“It was a great honour to visit the Cayman Islands and continue the long relationship the Royal Navy has had with the islands.“We were made to feel very welcome by everyone on Grand Cayman and I am delighted we had the opportunity to work with the emergency services to share knowledge and also better understand how we could assist the islanders in the event of a hurricane or any other emergency.”During Lancaster’s stay the ship’s company hosted the Governor and Premier of the Cayman Islands as well as a number of local dignitaries for a Reception and Capability Demonstration and the evening ended with the Royal Navy’s traditional ceremonial sunset. In addition 31 members of the local Combined Cadet Force were welcomed on board on Saturday for a tour of the warship; a new experience for many of the cadets.Lancaster will leave Grand Cayman knowing she is better prepared to conduct disaster relief and conduct counter narcotic operations whilst she is in the region. In addition, it has provided the sailors with an excellent opportunity to explore a far off part of the UK and take in some of the local wonders and culture, with ‘sting ray city’ being a highlight for many of the sailors.[mappress]Press Release, June 26, 2013; Image: Royal Navy View post tag: Cayman Islands View post tag: Hurricane Training & Education View post tag: Reassurancecenter_img View post tag: News by topic View post tag: Navy View post tag: Type 23 frigates Back to overview,Home naval-today Cayman Islands: Lancaster Provides Reassurance ahead of Hurricane Season View post tag: Defence View post tag: Naval View post tag: ahead Share this articlelast_img
