Come on Eli….I know you like Commissioner Velazquez, and are her friend. It’s okay Eli. Tuesday will decide both candidates fates, so sit back and chill, it is almost over. Peace Eli. Alice Nolan, a candidate in the Apopka City Commission Seat #2 election, has won The Apopka Voice Reader’s Poll heading into the runoff this Tuesday, March 10th. Nolan received 281 votes (54.8%), compared to 231 (45.2%) for incumbent Commissioner Diane Velazquez. 512 readers participated in the unscientific poll that started Wednesday and concluded today at noon.Commissioner Diane VelazquezAlice NolanIn 2016, Nolan surprised the Apopka political world by receiving 2,159 votes (22.74%) in the Seat #3 election against then-incumbent Commissioner Sam Ruth and eventual winner and current Commissioner Doug Bankson. She didn’t make it into that runoff but did gain political momentum that propelled her into the 2018 elections.Velazquez was elected to the Apopka City Council (Seat #2) in March of 2014 when she beat incumbent Marilyn Ustler McQueen with 2,646 votes (55%) to McQueen’s 2,145 votes (45%).All along, Nolan and Velazquez have been neck-and-neck in both polls and in the general election results, and it appeared that a runoff between the two was imminent.Velazquez won The Apopka Voice Reader’s poll conducted in January by 3 votes (41.3% to 40.9%), while Nolan won the February poll by 17 votes (45.1%-44%). Then on election day, Nolan edged Velazquez again with 2,478 votes (39.7%), while Velazquez received 2,340 votes (37.49%).This is the first poll to show any separation between the two candidates. The Apopka Voice Reader’s Poll Results:Apopka City Commission Seat #2:Alice Nolan 281 votes (54.8%)Commissioner Diane Velazquez 231 votes (45.2%) April 7, 2018 at 6:07 pm Eli RiveraIf I recall you were a big supporter of Susan Kidd, and she had experience but she didn’t care about the citizens of Apopka. Alice has shown leadership qualities that even I am in awe of. Vote for who you want, but don’t knock Alice! Congratulations Alice on winning this poll! Good luck and best wishes on the Election Day Runoff! Tell your sweet hubby hello for me……. Diane Valazquez is by far the best for city Council. She has years of experience as a New York police detective, along with the past four years where she has performed magnificently. Alice Nolan has no experience only a name. Such is the nature of opinions. But I dare to ask on these particular comments on showing leadership qualities and strong fiscal integrity, inclusion, for all communities. Where do you get that information from? Not to tarnish any candidates name, but please tell me the facts and proof of said proven qualities. Yes people need the chance to serve Apopka. But what does Not New York City have to do with anything but personal attacks. Where does special interest come in. What are Mrs Velasquez special interest? Please do try to help me understand. Help Apopka understand the character of candidates. Have we taken our eyes off the sparrow?Velasquez has risen to the occasion, has proven life experiences, has taken the extraordinarily time to enhance her government knowledge in which that she can better serve all Apopka. Did I mention the Time, and commitment of the daily hours needed to give to Apopka.Well it’s my opinion/ comment..Gracias – Thank You Reply The Anatomy of Fear Reply Eli Rivera Jr. Reply April 8, 2018 at 11:05 pm Reply Michael Heaton Mama Miacenter_img On a number of occasions since November, I have asked on this site and other social media sites what the accomplishments and aspirations are for Diane Velazquez as Apopka City Commissioner and never saw a response, and we all know these candidates monitor all the social media sites like a hawk. I made a decision to vote for Alice Nolan, as I have read what her aspirations are and I like them! Eli – I agree with you, somewhat… It would be good to list the accomplishments of each candidate. Also, what are their positions relativity to the important issues of the day?Spending ControlSingle-Member DistrictsProtecting the existing Errol homeowners from the adverse impacts from the New Errol projectRed Light CamerasDuring the last four years Velazquez has helped increase Apopka’s annual budget from $60 Million to over $120 Million. And allowed our surplus to be reduced by nearly $40 Million.During the recent City Council Public Hearing on New Errol she did not ask a single question.Last year she was the swing vote that approved a new five-year Red Light Camera contract. Nolan has pledged to vote to have the cameras removed on January 1, 2019. Moreover, Nolan will put “YOUTH/CITIZENS FIRST”, not SPECIAL INTERESTS, for sustainable economic growth.Remember, a person can not make a real difference by being SILENT on the sidelines and not exercising her or his RIGHT TO VOTE!
